What do you long for most? Is there something you have a hard time waiting for? Christmas day? The first day of summer? Vacation? Have you ever been on a road trip when you were a child or with your own children, with the constant question being asked, “Are we there yet?”
Psalm 27 concludes in verse 14 with waiting. We are called to wait on the Lord, “wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” This passage describes that the foundation for our waiting is confidence in our salvation. Waiting has not always come naturally to me. But the Lord is growing this in me. The Lord’s plans and ways are so much better than mine. As I recall His faithfulness throughout my life, it increases my confidence to continue to wait on Him now.
Verses 1-6 begin with the Psalmist detailing his desperate longing to be in the Lord’s presence. He describes who the Lord is. He is our light, salvation and stronghold (verse 1). We are called to seek Him, dwell with Him, and gaze on His beauty. Do you fear how God will provide in your life? Is there something you are waiting for that He has yet to answer? The Psalmist goes on to describe how the Lord hides him, conceals him, and sets him on a high rock.
The Psalmist continues with overflowing thankfulness. In verse 10, he describes that even when his closest family members fail him, the Lord’s love never fails. Because of our confidence in His salvation, we can seek God’s ways (verse 11).
He concludes with lasting confidence in Christ. Amidst hardship and disappointment, he will continue to believe and remain confident as he clings to the promise that he will see the goodness of the Lord (verse 13). He will take heart, be strong, and wait on the Lord.
Waiting can be hard — even excruciating at times. But God has shown me, and continues to show me, that growing in my confidence in Christ and my longing for His presence is so worth the wait! My prayer for you and for me is that we would long for Christ and His ways more each day and that the things of this world would pale in comparison to the goodness of Christ. I pray we would say, “are we there yet?” longing for our Heavenly home like a child eagerly awaiting the end of a long road trip. Being in His presence — face to face — will be worth the wait!
