Boundary Lines

Jul 1, 2026 | Devotional

We recently installed an invisible fence for our dog. She can now freely roam off her leash, frolicking outside, because we know she is secure within the boundary lines of our yard. Our confidence in knowing she is safely within bounds allows her to flourish and not to wander outside our lot and into potential danger.

In Psalm 16 David earnestly prayed, refocusing our hearts and minds on trusting the Lord and believing that only through a life fully content in Him do we have any life worth living at all (verse 2). David said, “the boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.” Do I live like this is true? Do I frolic and joyfully abide within the boundary lines of life that God has given me? Trusting, rejoicing, and celebrating that because the Lord is at my right hand, I will not be shaken (verse 8)? David knew there is nothing better than complete dependence upon the Lord and that to run after false gods would simply increase his sorrows (verse 4), yet how often do I look beyond the boundary lines of my life and choose to chase idols? Do I allow myself to consider if I’d be happier doing it my own way?

As David prophetically looked ahead, he knew that God would not abandon him, that there would be a holy One who would not see corruption (verse 10). We have this eternal truth in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. I can confidently trust that my life is now hidden in Christ (Colossians 3:3) and with that I dwell secure, knowing that there is nothing better than living each day in Christ, looking ahead to a beautiful inheritance, where one day  I will gaze upon the face of the Lord and find fullness of joy and pleasures forevermore (verse 16).
